| Channeling pain to do good |
[Jan. 31st, 2010|02:35 pm] |
Barkley - The dog that made me realize the connections that humans and dogs can have. A simple dog who adored all humans, especially those carrying food.
Rags - The reason that I am still alive. A dog smarter than me, who could push every single one of my buttons. Then, melt me into a blob of love two minutes later.
Chopper - The living example of a gentle giant. All creatures loved Chopper because he was so simple, honorable, and gentle.
Dawkins - The ball loving dog that crawled in my soul and still remains there. Scared of the world and needed so much. Yet, he gave back ten fold in his love for those than earned his trust.
In their memory, I am training to run the Chicago Marathon in October. I will be raising money for several animal charities. The fire that I feel is amazing. It feels good to have an outlet for the grief that I think does justice to these souls that have touched my life so much.
More to come. |

| Good-bye sweet Dude |
[Nov. 23rd, 2009|10:32 am] |
Today we are saying good-bye to dear, sweet Dude. He has been struggling for quite some time and has continued to deteriorate rather than getting better. He stopped eating or drinking this weekend and is having break through pain despite high pain killers. So, we feel that those are his signs that it is time for us to let him go.
Dude, we only knew you a short time but you placed yourself right into our lives and hearts. We wish we had more days, weeks, months, years with you. You will never, ever be forgotten, big man. |

| Kitchen Updates |
[Nov. 8th, 2009|06:12 pm] |
We added a backsplash to the kitchen. Well, *we* didn't add it. We *paid* someone to add it. It was a disaster the first time. But, they made it right .. and now I am happy.

| Too much feline estrogen |
[Oct. 30th, 2009|01:09 pm] |
Yadi has smugly taken over Hazel's bed. (Yes, it *is* on the dining room table. Don't laugh because one day you too might be living in an open concept house where there are few places for the cats to escape from menacing dogs.)

Hazel isn't really happy about this change of positions. She just sits, glares and occassionally hisses.

We need some testosterone around here. Badly. |

| Elton dresses the part |
[Oct. 21st, 2009|06:59 pm] |
Yes, it is Elton, *the* famous Elton. We have an annual party -- The Sweatpants and Mesh Hats College Football spectacular. Rules are simple -- you have to wear old school cotton sweatpants (elastic top AND bottom) and a trucker hat. Elton came to the party this year and he dressed the part. Well, minus the trucker hat which would stay on due to his lack o' ears. We let him slide on that one.
How flipping sweet is that business?

| A happy ending .. |
[Oct. 2nd, 2009|05:47 pm] |
Dave and I just got back from being out of town for a few days. We had a great time but returned to a missing cat. Yadi typically greets us at the door with her adorable barking meow. But, when we got back today, she was nowhere to be found. We were reassured because our dog sitter (Dave's sister) had seen her at 8 PM last night. We did have some workers come to the house this morning. They swore they hadn't left a door open longer enough to escape but we suspected otherwise.
After many many many tours around the house and property, Yadi wondered out from the woods this evening. She raced right in to her food and water dishes, acting like nothing ever happend. We rewarded her return with lots of good treats and cuddles.
We're glad she is home .. and hope that she never gets out again. She has become a very very very special part of our little family.

| A note to Hazel |
[Sep. 23rd, 2009|01:50 pm] |
Dear Hazel,
Thanks for killing the mice that get in our house. But, can you please refrain from bringing them to me proudly first thing in the morning when your dad is out of town? You are welcome to do anything else with them (e.g. deposit them in your dad's shoe). I just really don't want to admit that I live with mice and/or touch them.
In denial that mouse live in my home, Mom |

are dead to me.
Apparently I am supposed to do something more valuable with my Sundays than sit on the couch, eat crap and watch football. |

| Thank you and going home |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|08:52 pm] |
Thanks for the kind wishes for Spidey. They must have worked because he is on the mend. He got antibiotics, fluids and a few other things at the vet. They really think it is just stress related from the neuter. I look forward to seeing him rebound.
On that note -- Spidey and Buff are both going to a new home next weekend! A wonderful, wonderful, wonderful man came to see Buff and fell in love with Spidey too (shocking!). Spidey and Buff really do fit together well and we couldn't hold Spidey back for our own purchases. We are a bit sad but completely overjoyed at this perfect home that they are going too (single guy, very succesful, works from home, our vet LOVES him, recently had a 22 year cat that passed away after substantial vet care, etc etc etc). It is a home that everyone would dream of for a kitten. So, as of next weekend, we will be kitten-less. It should be an interesting change. |

| Get better, Spiderman |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|08:35 am] |
Spidey was neutered on Monday. He had an undecended testicle so it was a bit more complex. He started vomiting yesterday and got progressively worse last night. Now he is vomiting with diarrhea. I slept with him last night and Spidey just curled up and cuddled with me all night (minus brief bathroom or puke trips). While it was enjoyable for me, I really want to see our crazy Spidey back. This docile, cuddly creature is as foreign to us as I'm sure it is to him.
We are off to the vet this morning. I hope that it is something easily resolved and he recovers quickly. I miss my crazy Spidey. Plus, I'm worried sick about what is wrong.

| The pure joy of animals .... |
[Jul. 1st, 2009|09:48 am] |
After 3 long months of raising kittens, Yadi is finally able to relax and just live. She is still concerned about the final two, keeps a close eye on them, and is very protective (she is INCREDIBLY laid back ... but she has shown that she has no fear of Hazel, Dude or anything else when it comes to protecting her kittens!).
And the true joy ... she now plays! She runs and wrestles with her kittens and chases toys and feathers with us. It is incredible to see her happiness. It is much deserved! |

| The questions of a lifetime ... |
[Jun. 29th, 2009|05:22 pm] |
1) Why does Dude insist on going outside to drink water? He has a perfectly fine (and clean) water bowl inside . Yet he insists on going outside multiple (like a lot) times each day just to drink out of the outside water dish. Then he wants to come back in. So, he is just going outside to drink. And, cotton, before you get smart with me, we have thought about removing the outside water dish. It just seems like such a mean thing to do to the old man. Plus, what would I have to bitch about if I always made the right decisions?
2) Why in the heck is Spidey completely and utterly socially unacceptable when it comes to playing with other kittens? We are down to two (yes, one buff one went home yesterday). And, this poor final buff one is getting pounded by Spidey on a regular basis. He has no finesse, kindess, manners. He is a bully. It was relatively OK when he spread his wrath among multiple kittens. Now it is just one getting hammered. And, the guy is getting beat to a pulp. So, we are going to have to separate these kittens for a bit. I quite literally have to be the only person on the face of the planet that raises jackarse dogs and kittens like it was a past-time. I should not be trusted with impressionable animals.
3) Why can't I potty train animals? I am really good at teaching sit, down, stay (ok, maybe not to the cats -- but I can teach them not to scratch!). But, I SUCK potty training. Across the board. I just suck. The kittens are fine. But, Hazel and Yadi are in a litter box war. We have 3 boxes set-up but it seems like they are fighting over one. And, someone is losing because someone keeps going right.outside.the.box. Best guess is Hazel but who knows. I need to go back to animal training school. Stat. |

| And we have three ... |
[Jun. 20th, 2009|07:45 pm] |
The home for the 2 buff kittens fell through. Disappointing but it is probably a good thing in the end.
So, these sweet and beautiful boys are back on the adoption market. Hopefully their right home will come along soon. They were inside today napping with Dave on the couch and Dave and I were both commenting on how freaking surprised we are that they are the last two left. They are such stunning, wonderful little boys.

| Scared fish? |
[Jun. 18th, 2009|09:09 pm] |
Between Spidey and the new wall decoration that resembles plates, the fish are probably starting to think that they are destined to become sushi.

| Spoiler alert .. Spoiler alert ... |
[Jun. 8th, 2009|08:40 am] |
This is what happens in Twilight ..

Despite what it looks like in the photo, no kittens were injured in the making of this photo. The buff kitten was the sound asleep that only kittens can do and kept getting pounced on. He slept peacefully through the whole attack. |
